What is ECNR in Passport?

Designated Indian passport holders are required under the Emigration Act of 1983 to get an Emigration Clearance from the ‘Protector of Emigrants’ office prior to going to such nations. ECR (Emigration Check Required) permits are essential for Indians who want to work in specific countries. Approved passport holders will be needed to get an Emigration Clearance from the Office of the Protector of Emigrants before going to select countries (POE).

What is ECNR in Passport

For passports obtained prior to January 2007, when there is no notation in the passport, it is an ECR passport. If a passport issued later than January 2007 has no markings, it is a Non-ECR or Emigration Check Not Required Passport.

Individuals Eligible for ECNR

The following individuals are eligible for ECNR Passports:

  • Holders with diplomatic/official passports
  • Public servants, wives, and dependent minors
  • Income taxpayers, spouses, and dependents minors
  • Holders holding advanced professional degrees
  • Individuals with matriculation or higher educational degrees Seamen with a Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) or Sea Cadets and Deck Cadets
  • Individuals holding permanent immigration visas, like those from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia
  • Individuals having a two- or three-year diploma from any institution accredited by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) or the State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) (SCVT)
  • Professional nurses, as defined by the Indian Nursing Council Act of 1947
  • Individuals above the age of 50
  • Persons who have lived overseas for further than 3 years (either continuously or intermittently) and their spouses
  • Individuals under 18 years of age

Necessary Documentation for Emigration Clearance at the Office of the Protector of Emigrants

  • Passport whose validity must not be less than 6 months from the date of application
  • Verified Employment Visa with Authentic Signed Agreement by Overseas Company Declaration from Applicant Regarding the Authenticity of Documentation under Pravasi Bhartiya Bima Policy 2006
  • Corroborated two copies of the individual’s evidence of eligibility for ECNR. Take the document with you as well.
  • A utilities bills or bank statement can serve as proof of residence. A ration card is NOT an acceptable form of identification.
  • 2 copies of the passport’s initial and final 4 pages.

When to Apply for ECNR?

You must apply for an ECNR stamp if you are traveling to any of the listed countries under and do not already have an ECNR stamp on your passport or if ECR is inscribed on your passport.

Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, Libya, Jordan, Brunei, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Syria, Lebanon, Thailand, and Iraq are among the countries represented.

How to Apply for the ECNR Stamp?

Complete the form personally, through an agent (who must have an authorization document approved by you), or via registered mail.

Duration for ECNR Application Processing

The ECNR stamping procedure takes 3-4 days.

Fees for ECNR Processing

Together with submitting the registration form, you must pay an all-inclusive cost of Rs.300/-. The charges can be made in cash or by bank drafts made payable to the Regional Passport Officer in your location.
