It was 1736 when Wadia Group, the name that is perhaps one of the oldest in the country, came into existence. With well over 200 years of legacy, the group still stands tall and is one of the most respected not just in India, but around the world.
The history of the company boasts of the brands such as Bombay Burmah Trading Corp. Ltd. and Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturing Co. The course of the company started in 1736 when Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia established a ship-building enterprise that began building 355 ships, along with the first ships built for the British naval fleet outside of England. Lovji and his brother Sorabji created the first dry dock in Asia, the Bombay dry dock, in 1750. With a glorious history in this business itself, the ships built by them have been part of some very historical events for many countries. For instance, it was aboard one of their ships that the US National anthem was first composed in 1812.
Today, the company operates in a variety of industries, including real estate, aviation, consumer goods, plantations, chemicals, and healthcare. The firm joined the aviation industry in 2005 with the creation of GoAir, a low-cost airline. GoAir has a market share of around 10% as well as a fleet of 19 airplanes.
National Peroxide Limited (NPL) is a public limited company that was founded in 1954 and is registered on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). NPL is a peroxygen chemical pioneer in India and the biggest maker of Hydrogen Peroxide in India, including an installed power capacity of 95,000 MTPA on a 50 percent w/w basis. Its completely integrated Hydrogen Peroxide production plant is in Kalyan, Maharashtra (India).
In 2011, the group entered the real estate market in order to commercialize its 10000 acres of property. Bombay Realty, the firm’s real-estate business, plans to turn this property into commercial buildings, hotels, apartments, branded homes, and healthcare facilities.
The Wadia Group purchased a 100 percent stake in Gherzi Eastern Limited “(GEL)” from the Gherzi Group, making The Wadia Group the only promoter of GEL. In 2012, the name “Gherzi Eastern Limited” was renamed to “Wadia Techno-Engineering Services Limited.” WTESL has been a leading company from its start and has helped design some of contemporary India’s most iconic structures.
