Akash Surface To Air Missile

On 21st July 2021, the DRDO efficiently flew the new-generation Akash surface-to-air ballistic missile from an operational testing range off the shores of Orissa. The latest Akash missile (Akash-NG) can attack objects up to 60 kilometers away and travel at speeds of up to Mach 2.5. While being in completely unmanned control, the Akash SAM systems may deploy numerous air threats.

The Akash surface-to-air missile (DefenceSAM) system was initially developed by the Indian government-affiliated Defence Research & Development Organization. (DRDO). The warhead is created as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). The Naga, Agni, and Trishul missiles, as well as the Prithvi missile system, were also developed as part of the project.

The missile has been manufactured in two variants for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army (IA). The IA received the first batch of Akash missiles in May 2015. In March 2012, the IAF received the first Akash missile. In July 2015, the missile was officially adopted into the IAF.

History of Akash Missiles

The first test flights of the Akash Missiles were conducted in 1990 as Mark-I and in 2005 they were capable enough to destroy 2 simultaneous targets in sonic mode.

Akash-1S was a result of the request by the Indian Armed Forces for a missile that can more effectively eliminate incoming threats. The DRDO proposed the Akash-1S, an improved variant of the Akash missile, for this purpose. The DRDO ran tests on May 25 and 27, 2019. It had a striking radius of 30 km and could deliver 60 kg warheads from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Orissa. This missile can take out jet fighters and unmanned aerial vehicles from a range of 18 to 30 kilometers and can be launched from both tracked and motorized vehicles for better maneuverability.

Akash Prime was the following iteration following Akash-1s, with a launch attempt on September 27, 2021. This missile detected and eliminated an autonomous imitation of an aerial vehicle. It is outfitted with active radio frequencies, which improves the missile’s precision. It is employed in activities in cold weather and extreme altitudes.

The Akash-NG missile is a sequel weapon with a revised layout. It was sanctioned in September 2016 with the financing of 470 crores and has a faster response rate as well as a higher degree of defense from aerial threats.

Missile Configuration

It consists of a singular digital scanning array radar named Rajendra 3d. It has approximately three warheads and four terminals. Each cannon can detect 64 objectives and launch an assault on 12 of those. The Akash Missile contains a 60 kg pre-fragmented warhead and a proximity explosive.

It can safeguard an automotive platoon. It was designed mainly for air defense SAM use, although it was subsequently deployed for a missile shield. It can give 2000 kilometers of air defense coverage. The missile weighs 720 kg at launch and has a wingspan of 1,105 mm, a length of 5.8 m, and a radius of 350 mm.
