India is the world’s second-most populated country, with a census in excess of 1.2 billion people. With an area of 3.288 million square kilometers, it is the world’s seventh-largest country. It has a 7,500-kilometer-long coastline. India is a varied nation with more than 22 major languages and 415 dialects. 

The nation is host to great agro-ecological variety, with ton largest mountainous region on the planet, the Himalayas to the north, the Thar Desert to the west, the Eastern Ghats delta to the east, and the Deccan Plateau to the south. With a GDP of $ 2.1 trillion, India is the world’s third-largest economy after the United States and China.

And over the years India has risen to become the largest producer of many commodities, which not only is consumed by it its vast population but also is exported around the world. India is the world’s largest producer of milk, pulses, and jute, and ranks second in rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnut, vegetables, fruit, and cotton production. It’s also one of the top producers of spices, seafood, poultry, cattle, and field crops.

Here are a few of the many products that India leads the world in terms of production:

Milk

India tops the globe in milk supply (buffalo and goat), which may not come as a surprise given that India overtook the United States in milk output in 1998, courtesy of Verghese Kurien’s Operation Flood. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, India exported 48039.4 million tonnes of milk products to the globe in 2017-18, valued at Rs 1196 crore.

Banana

Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra are the top three banana-producing states in India. After cereals, sugar, coffee, and cocoa, bananas are the world’s 5th most traded agro-based item. The production of bananas per hectare in India is more than double that of the rest of the globe. India sells the fruit to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf countries.

Jute

Jute, often referred to as golden fiber, is grown in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha. Jute is largely exported from India to the United States, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Australia, and Turkey.

Mango

Indian mangoes have been in the worldwide spotlight since 2007 when India permitted Harley Davidson to invest in return for the easing of an 18-year-old ban on mangoes in the United States. The top mango-producing states in the country are Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. India is the largest producer with more than 40% of the world’s mangoes. The fruit is shipped to the UAE, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal.

These are just the most common product that is produced in India on a scale that exceeds most of the world combined. With prospects in agro and technology, India is in line to surpass many leading countries in producing lot many commodities in the near future.
