The Least Populated State in India – The Largest State in India

India is the 2nd most populous country in the world after China, with a population in excess of 1.4 billion the population is growing at a steady rate. However, with the total area of land in India which is the 7th largest in the world, the population density on an average is still wieldy, and the resources are ample.

However, the population of India is not spread uniformly spread across all states and regions and some states may be far more populous than the others. Most of the time the reason behind this could be the many opportunities for the particular region in terms of employment or business scope. Or sometimes the difficult environmental conditions may be a hindrance for many to reside in a particular region and prefer others instead.

Whatever may be the reason, the clear anomaly in the population of states across India is very apparent.

Highest Population Density State in India

According to Census 2011, Bihar is by far the most heavily populous state in India, whereas Delhi has the densest population among all Union Territories. Bihar has a population density of 1,102, which is more than West Bengal, which was once first in terms of population density, while Kerala comes third with 859.

The number of persons per unit area is used to determine the density of the population. In 2011, India’s density of population was 382 persons per square kilometer.

The Least Populated State in India

Sikkim has the lowest population for a state in India. Sikkim has a populace of 610,577 people according to the 2011 national survey. It is also one of the lowest-densely inhabited states in India. According to the Census of India-2011, Sikkim’s overall population was barely 0.05 percent of India’s national population.

Some reasons that are attributed to the low population and the least density of population in the state include reasons such as its hilly terrains which makes it difficult for people to reside and transport. Also since the indigenous people of the land do not encourage outsiders to reside in the state, which is another reason. One prime reason is that the fertility rate of the state is very low, resulting in a lower birth rate.

The Largest State in India

In India, there are now 28 states and 8 union territories (UTs). Rajasthan has the most land area amounting to 342,239 square kilometers, trailed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. It is located in India’s northwest region, where it encompasses the vast and unforgiving Thar Desert which is also popularly referred to as the Great Indian Desert. A major part of the state’s land mass is desert land.
